My shampoo solution

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

I have basically two kinds of readers here: serious plastic reduction folk, and co-workers. (Hi gang!) The later group might not understand how seriously some of the former take the issue of not using commercial shampoos, which includes the plastic bottle and for some the chemicals included. The baking-soda-and-vinegar alternative didn’t appeal, and it’s not [...]

Easy steps to help your friends use less plastic

Monday, January 19th, 2009

I’m here in Washington, D.C. and quite close to the action of tomorrow’s inauguration of Barack Obama as the forty-fourth President of the United States. I can only imagine how much plastic will be used in the collective festivities. But that’s not why I’m writing.

Airport eating: Charlotte

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

I’m back from Georgia! (You didn’t know I was away?) I changed flights in Charlotte (CLT) and had a plastic-free meal in the airport. Thought I had better record this miracle.

I love the smell of guava paste in the winter

Monday, January 5th, 2009

I’m officially tired of hearty, earthy rustic food; that is, winter food. But many of the alternatives are either artificially flavored and sweetened, are imported under refrigeration for long distances or both. And that’s before we get to the plastic. (So much for the frozen berries that lighten many a table this time of year.)
Which [...]

Source? Index cards without plastic

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Does anyone have a source for index cards without a plastic wrapper. Back when I was younger, you could get them — and index tabs; which can be gotten in pasteboard boxes — bound in a band of paper.
Perhaps from an office supply source, rather than a retailer? Please leave me a lead in [...]
